Our active carpet cleaning solutions are plant based and completely safe for people and pets. Toxin free solutions that work, furthermore, cleaning products are odourless.

After preparation of all areas, we rinse clean with water, adding no toxic rinsing agents.

So, how are we claiming to offer the purest carpet clean in the South East?

The purest carpet clean available from Natural Carpet Care

The purest carpet clean available in the South East. This sounds like a bold claim. So, how have we managed to take a step further with our sofa, rug, mattress and carpet cleaning services?

After research relating to the water supplied to us here in Sussex, we realised a new service was needed. Our local water company was privatised some time ago. As with most services / utilities, profits are prioritised over consumers.

We tested local water quality, after examining all results, we were particularly concerned with the levels of dissolved solids present in tap water.

Water is an important part of the carpet cleaning process. After preparing carpets, our products and dirt / debris are rinsed away. Collecting in our recovery tanks in our professional extraction machines.

This process works well. Its efficient, leaving our customers carpet dry in around 4 hours.

We thought about this, if we are using tap water to rinse after cleaning preparation, what about the contents of the tap water?

Any impure water content will be left in the fibres, so, what exactly could be found lurking in our tap water? We can also offer the service when we are upholstery / sofa cleaning.

WATER PRIVATISATION

The privatisation of the water industry in England and Wales in 1989 has been blamed for  reduced quality of tap water. In some parts of the country, including Southern England.

For example, a 2021 report by the Environmental Audit Committee found that water companies in England and Wales had failed to invest enough in their infrastructure. This lead to leaks and spills of treated water. The report also found that water companies were not doing enough to test for emerging pollutants. Such as PFAS, which are a group of chemicals that have been linked to a range of health problems.

More about PFAS

PFAS, or per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, are a group of man-made chemicals that have been used in a wide variety of products. They are for water-resistant, stain-resistant, and have non-stick properties. They are also known as “forever chemicals” because they do not break down easily in the environment.

PFAS can enter the water supply through a number of sources, including:

  • Industrial discharges: PFAS are used in a variety of industrial processes, such as the production of firefighting foams, textiles, and carpets. These chemicals can be released into the environment through wastewater discharges from factories and other industrial facilities.
  • Municipal wastewater treatment plants: PFAS can also be released into the environment through municipal wastewater treatment plants. These chemicals are not always removed by the treatment process and can end up in the treated effluent, which is then discharged into rivers and streams.
  • Diffuse sources: PFAS can also enter the environment from diffuse sources, such as runoff from agricultural fields and landfills. These chemicals can be carried by rainwater and snowmelt into rivers, lakes, and groundwater.

Once PFAS enter the water supply, they can accumulate in the bodies of fish and other aquatic animals. People can then be exposed to PFAS by eating contaminated fish or drinking contaminated water.

PFAS have been linked to a number of health problems, including:

  • Cancer: Some studies have shown that exposure to PFAS can increase the risk of certain types of cancer, such as kidney cancer and testicular cancer.
  • Developmental and reproductive problems: PFAS have also been linked to developmental and reproductive problems, such as low birth weight and decreased sperm count.
  • Immune system problems: PFAS can also interfere with the immune system, making people more susceptible to infections.
  • Other health problems: PFAS have also been linked to other health problems, such as liver damage, thyroid problems, and high cholesterol.

In Southern England, there have been a number of high-profile incidents of water contamination in recent years. In 2019, residents of Eastbourne were warned not to drink their tap water after it was found to be contaminated with E. coli. And in 2021, residents of Worthing were told to boil their water after it was found to be contaminated with coliform bacteria.

These incidents have raised concerns about the quality of tap water in Southern England and the ability of water companies to ensure its safety.

Here are some contaminants found in Sussex tap water –

  • Arsenic: Arsenic is a naturally occurring element that can be found in groundwater. It is a known carcinogen and can cause a variety of health problems, including skin cancer, lung cancer, and bladder cancer.
  • Lead: Lead is a metal that can be found in pipes and solder. It can leach into drinking water and cause a variety of health problems, including learning disabilities, behavioral problems, and kidney damage.
  • Nitrates: Nitrates are naturally occurring compounds that can also be found in fertilizers. They can be converted into nitrites in the body, which can cause methemoglobinemia, a condition that can lead to blue baby syndrome in infants.
  • PFAS: PFAS are a group of man-made chemicals that have been linked to a variety of health problems, including cancer, developmental problems, and immune system problems.
  • Radon: Radon is a radioactive gas that can seep into groundwater. It can cause lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer death in the United States.

Natural Carpet Care have always advocated the avoidance of chemical exposure, particularly in your home. A stage has been reached where people have to take further steps to protect themselves in every way they can. Avoiding the contents of tap water is now important.

Its cheaper to clean carpets and furniture using tap water. If you are focused on the health of your family, using filtered water in a carpet cleaning process WILL  reduce chemical exposure, leaving no residues behind after.

Without a doubt, our utility companies are money focussed. Money will certainly be a primary consideration and not the well being of customers.

Distilled water for purer, cleaner, carpet cleaning

When cleaning carpet fibres with just water, there are a few dissolved solids that can remain, even after the water has evaporated. These dissolved solids can include:

  • Calcium: Calcium is a mineral that is commonly found in tap water. It can leave behind a white residue on carpet fibres.
  • Magnesium: Magnesium is another mineral that is commonly found in tap water. It can leave behind a white or grey residue on carpet fibres.
  • Chlorine: Chlorine is a disinfectant that is often added to tap water. It can leave behind a faint odour and a yellow or brown residue on carpet fibres.
  • Iron: Iron is a mineral that can sometimes be found in tap water. It can leave behind a rusty red residue on carpet fibres.
The amount of dissolved solids that remain in carpet fibres after cleaning with just water depends on the type of tap water, the amount of water used, and the thoroughness of the drying process.
  • Chalk Living an the coast means an increased possibility of finding our water is actually – hard water.
